A nun is arrested in Italy for stealing gold jewelry valued at 80 thousand euros.

Most of the stolen gold pieces are irrecoverable as they were subjected to smelting operations while the nun transferred the money abroad.

A nun from Ariano Irpino, Campania, has been arrested for stealing jewelry and gold objects valued at 80 thousand euros, after the local bishop reported the disappearance of jewelry donated by faithful to various parishes.

The Benevento Prosecutor's Office ordered her house arrest after the Carabineros confirmed that the nun of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit sold the stolen objects and transferred the money abroad.

The nun, who was mother superior of the Episcopal Curia, had access to the sacred jewels and offerings.

The investigation began after the bishop's report on the disappearance of pieces of votive gold and a relic of Saint Nicholas of Bari.

The searches and interrogations revealed that the nun, with keys to the Curia, appropriated the objects, selling them for at least 80 thousand euros, before sending the money abroad.

Most of the pieces are irrecoverable, since they were melted down; Only one ingot and some jewelry and bracelets were recovered, found in his room inside a laundry basket.

Due to the risk of flight, due to her conduct and connections abroad, a judge issued the arrest warrant, and the nun confessed to the crimes upon receiving notification of her house arrest.
