A man in China was burned to death in an elevator after the battery of his electric scooter exploded, an event captured by security cameras.

The images show how he entered the elevator with the battery in his right hand, and seconds later, it exploded, engulfing him in flames.

Neighbors waiting for the elevator heard the explosion and fled the scene. Later, security personnel removed the completely burned body from the elevator, while others tried to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

According to experts, lithium batteries, used in electric vehicles for their high energy density and fast charging capabilities, can explode if not handled properly.

A phenomenon known as "thermal runaway", in which the battery heats up uncontrollably and accelerates a chemical reaction, can lead to an explosion if not stopped in time.

Although lithium battery explosions are relatively rare, they can occur from short circuits, overcharging, physical damage, or manufacturing defects.
