Omar Bin Omran, who disappeared at the age of 17 in the city of Djelfa, Algeria, was discovered this week in a hole after being held by his neighbor for 27 years in a house less than 200 meters from his home.
The victim is believed to be one of nine children who disappeared in Djelfa exactly 27 years ago.
At the time, Omar's family thought he had been killed during the Civil War between the government and Islamist rebel groups, which lasted more than 10 years in the 1990s and early 2000s.
In low-quality images taken with a mobile device, torches can be seen inside a hole surrounded by hay. Omar, with worn clothes and hair full of straw, seems surprised by the uniformed men surrounding him.
Since his rescue, few images of Omar have circulated, showing a bearded man leaving the basement, and of him as a teenager with babies and in another wearing a green suit and black tie, with a dog, before disappearing through more than 30 years.
His dog was looking for him in the area and was poisoned.
According to the Algerian newspaper "El Khabar", it is believed that Omar's dog was looking for him near the place where he was being held, recognizing his characteristic smell. However, it was reported that the kidnapper poisoned the dog to keep the family away.
His perpetrator, whose identity the police have not yet released, was arrested but worked as a public official and lived alone, according to Algerian media.
