Bus with 20 passengers falls into a river in Saint Petersburg in Russia

According to images recorded by security cameras, the driver lost control of the bus and hit several cars before falling into the river.

A bus with around twenty passengers fell this Friday into the Moika River from a bridge located in the center of Saint Petersburg, Russian police reported.

Emergency services are trying to rescue people who are in the water, whose temperature is lower than usual, since these days Russia is experiencing an anomalous cold wave for this time of year.

Police in the former tsarist capital reported that they received the emergency call around 1:00 p.m. local time.

Apparently, according to local media, which cite images recorded by security cameras, the driver lost control of the bus, hitting several cars before plunging into the river.

The governor, Alexandr Beglov, confirmed the accident and assured that he is coordinating rescue efforts with emergency personnel, the Red Cross, municipal and health services.

The bus fell into the water from a metal bridge built in the 18th century, but rebuilt in the early 20th century.

The one known as the Kissing Bridge is located a short distance from the Marinski Theater in what is considered the cultural capital of this country, known for its numerous canals.
