In the body camera video, blood splashes are seen coming from Officer Hernández's body.

Officer Jonah Hernandez, age 35, of the Las Cruces Police Department, was killed on duty by Armando Silva, age 29, on February 11, 2024 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The officer's attacker was shot dead by a man who happened to be passing by.

Around 5 pm a 911 call was made about a man breaking into a business in the back.

Officer Hernandez responded to the scene and approached the suspect and the suspect, armed with a knife, ran toward the officer and stabbed him in the neck and head several times.

In the body camera video, blood splashes are seen coming from Officer Hernández's body. The officer can be heard gurgling in his own blood and is unable to speak.

Then, an armed civilian identified as Issiah Astorga, 29, shot and killed Armando. Prosecutors decided not to file charges against Issiah.

Issiah and another man ran to Officer Hernandez's aid, but the officer died at the scene. Authorities said Armando had a long history of violent crimes and mental illness.
