At least 60 bullet casings were left behind in an armed attack recorded on the morning of this Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in Manta, Ecuador, a province that remains in a state of emergency due to high crime rates.
According to the police report, the armed attack left a mechanic dead and a woman injured.
The fatal victim was identified as Ronny Piguave Mendoza, 34, who has no criminal record.
The police said that they are analyzing the security videos and that the victim was inside a parked vehicle, at the time that two subjects carrying assault rifles got out from another vehicle carrying out the attack.
In addition, a burning vehicle was abandoned near the scene, which would have been used by the attackers.
Local authorities have intensified investigations following this violent incident. Security operations were established throughout the city to try to identify those responsible for the attack.
The region has been hit by a growing wave of violence, largely related to drug trafficking and fighting between rival gangs.
