Israeli police kill Turkish citizen after attack in Jerusalem

The officer who was stabbed and another police officer in the area shot and killed the attacker, police added.

A police officer was slightly injured in a stabbing attack in Jerusalem's Old City, authorities said Tuesday. The attacker, a Turkish national, was shot dead.

According to police, the Turkish man lunged at a border police officer near the entrance to Herod's Gate and stabbed him in the upper body.

The injured man was taken by the ambulance service to the Shaare Zedek medical center in the capital, which said he was conscious and in moderate condition.

The officer who was stabbed and another police officer in the area shot and killed the attacker, police added.

The suspect was later identified as 34-year-old Hasan Saklanan. Defense sources said he entered Israel legally on Monday as a visitor, through the Jordan River crossing with Jordan.

It is extremely rare for a foreign national to carry out an attack in Israel, and there have been no such incidents in recent memory.

Police later released surveillance camera footage showing Saklanan walking behind two police officers before grabbing him and attempting to stab one of them in the head.

In the video footage, Saklanan and the injured police officer are seen fighting, while the second officer works to push the attacker away.

After the wounded officer manages to free himself from the attacker, both he and the second police officer open fire and kill Saklanan.
