A woman identified as Jennifer Lee Wilson, 48 years old and weighing 154 kilos, was sentenced to six years in prison for the death of her 10-year-old adopted son, Dakota Stevens.
Jennifer pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October 2024.
In April of that year, authorities responded to a call of a pulseless child whom they attempted to resuscitate, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
During the investigation, bruises were found on Dakota's neck and chest. Jennifer, who weighed 154 kilograms, admitted to sitting on the boy for five minutes as punishment.
“I laid on him because he was acting out,” Jennifer said. Shortly after, noticing that Dakota was not responding, the woman tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and called 911, NBC Chicago reported.
Witnesses reported that Dakota had tried to seek refuge at a neighbor's house. The cause of death was determined to be mechanical asphyxiation, classified as a homicide.
