A New York police officer shoots down a man who was holding his own mother hostage.
The subject later identified as Michael Dotel, 30, was holding his mother hostage in the living room.
Recently released body camera video related to a hostage situation last December in New York City shows a police officer fatally shooting a man who was holding his own mother hostage.
Police responded to an apartment near East 198th Street and Creston Avenue in the Bronx around 11:30 a.m. on December 23, responding to a 911 call about a man wielding a knife and “acting violently.” ” and possibly under the influence of drugs.
After knocking on the door, a woman opened the door crying and ran into the hallway. At that moment, two agents entered the property and found Michael Dotel, 30, who was holding his mother hostage in the living room.
Dotel had his right arm around his mother's throat and was choking her with his left hand, applying “additional pressure” to the victim's neck, police said. The subject also told the agents that he had a knife and challenged them to open fire.
Officer Alex Morgese only opened fire after the victim began to lose consciousness, police said.
The video shows the officer asked Dotel if he had a knife.
-“I have the knife,” he responded. "I have it right here." That was the last thing he said.
Paramedics took Dotel to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, with a bullet hole in his head.
The attorney general's office said in a separate statement that Dotel appeared to have stabbed both women.
